Learning in the Limelight at a Georgia Summer Camp

You wont hear 12 year old movie directors mentioned at the Academy Awards yet. But given some time, these talented students just might make it big.

Hundreds of 7-17 year olds applied their talents in a weeklong film production course at iD Tech Camps at a Georgia summer camp on the Emory University campus the past few summers. By the end of the week, each student team created inspiring movies with special effects using cutting-edge technology, including lighting kits and green screens from Photoflex, Canon camcorders, Apple Final Cut Pro editing software, and Adobe After Effects special effects software.

With the skills they learn in one week, these up-and-coming student directors could be ready for an internship in the movie industry, said Kevin Painchaud, owner of an award-winning Hollywood-based movie production company and 7th year lead digital video instructor for iD Tech Camps . The equipment and software they use is exactly what my production company uses. What wonderful exposure to receive at such a young age. One of the things that makes many of their movies so powerful is their use of lighting and special effects to evoke mood, says Painchaud. With the use of the Photoflex professional lighting equipment, the students work was elevated to the next level.

Students used the Photoflex FlexDrop green screen to superimpose backgrounds, including purely digital fabrications made from Adobe After Effects. With the Photoflex LiteDisc reflectors, students could also easily control the sunlight when filming outside.

We learned a lot about cinematography and special effects, one student said. In one scene my crew and I used the green screen to add a ghostly figure that enters a room through a closed door to pursue the main character.

While many Emory students were on location at the Emory campus in Georgia, another iD Tech student, Brittany, and her group filmed the short movie Subject #14 while attending the same program at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York. A chilling tale of descent into madness, Subject #14 won the programs nationwide competition for Best Drama.

We created amazing lighting effects! Brittany said. It was really cool. We could make the actors look brighter or darker depending on what we wanted.

These up-and-coming movie directors quickly discovered that this technique reduced shadows and created a diffused lighting effect. To open up the room and make it brighter, Brittanys crew adjusted a Photoflex Digital Lighting Kit so that its SilverDome softbox and Starlite light pointed toward the ceiling.

By the end the weeklong course, the digital media students gain confidence and leadership skills. Many of them say they look forward to pursuing careers in the movie industry. Getting started in Hollywood may be a challenge, but with the experience these iD Tech Camp students have gained, their journey has already begun.

Karen Thurm Safran writes for iD Tech Camps provides weeklong hands-on technology summer camps for boys and girls ages 7-17 at 40 prestigious universities nationwide. The summer camp in Georgia is located on the Emory University campus. At this day and overnight camp, students produce digital movies, create video games, design websites, learn programming & robotics, and more. A True (Entrepreneurial) Tale of Synchronicity and Guidance

Over the years, people have come to me and asked how I got into the special events industry or how I started my special events location and production company and became an "expert" so quickly. I thought that one day I would put the story in writing for those who are curious and I decided that day has come. It seems rather timely, as I recently made the decision to completely release my corporate business in order to devote myself exclusively to teaching my Feel Free to Prosper program to help others align themselves with Universal laws to overcome adversity and accomplish as I have.

The sole client I maintained this past couple of years has been Campbell Soup, which spent over $450 million dollars to create promotions targeted at children. That client came to me literally "out of the blue" just after I began teaching my program. I had a key role in these promotions, securing spectacular locations - the Hollywood mansions, English castle and private Caribbean island that lucky children would win for a week's stay with their friends and family as the Grand Prize. This August was the fulfillment month for promotions # 4, 5 and 6 that were booked earlier in the year. I became aware this past August that it was time to "cut the cord" after two decades of owning a business that serviced the worlds largest corporations.

So how did this career of two decades begin? What was my background and experience? How did I get started? Did I have any material or financial advantage? Were prosperity principles involved?

The answers...

How did this career begin? Out of the blue

What was my experience? None

How did I get started? Pure synchronicity and intuitive guidance

Did I have any material or financial advantage? Absolutely not

Were prosperity principles involved? Absolutely yes

The story...

Be prepared for a detailed account of synchronicity and Universal guidance borne out of my application of prosperity principles - this will be a free flowing tale as I remember the details. I may not be inspired again to tell it, so I will offer it in full. But I will submit it in sections, so that it is not overwhelming and so that you may absorb the full impact of the synchronicity and prosperity lessons learned along the way. You will discover how the beginning of this story flows into the subsequent connected experiences and weaves itself into the creation of my company and the business that lasted over 20 years, despite some very intense times. This installment contains Part I and a link to take you to the rest of the evolving story...

It begins in the early 80s and at a point in my life when I was in limbo and in debt. I had made my first attempt at a free lance business that gave me some experience but didn't go very far. I was at a crossroads and in debt and didn't know what direction to take. I was in various stages of the study of metaphysics and learning about the mind and mental and spiritual laws. I knew I had to do something about my situation and do it quickly. I was always intrigued with the metaphysical and psychic world, parapsychology and the whole idea of being "guided" by our intuition. So I made the decision that my immediate "job" would be to seriously apply what I had been learning from the prosperity teachers and literature. And I did just that. I took what I was learning and put my heart into applying it.

PART I: BRANCUSI WHO?

It was a very, very hot summer day in Los Angeles - a heat wave. The last thing I would have thought to do was to go shopping for clothes or run around town in the heat. Hey, I loved fashion but there were certainly no funds for new wardrobe items. I had to find a way out of thousands of dollars of debt I had somehow managed to incur while "free lancing" in business.

Suddenly I had a spontaneous urge to go to the very exclusive department store, Bonwit Teller, on Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills. I didn't know why. Well, I reasoned, at least it would be well air-conditioned. I drove to the store and went to the designer department.

There I immediately ran into a saleswoman whom I had not seen since she worked at Neiman Marcus and had sold me a few items maybe a year or two before. Imagine my surprise when she said she had been thinking of me just that morning and said to herself, I'll bet Marilyn would know what to do with this situation. She knew about a woman who lived in Palm Springs who was trying to sell a sculpture by the sculptor Brancusi and the owner was offering a finder's fee to someone who could find a buyer for her.

Brancusi? Never heard of him. I actually knew nothing about the art business and certainly wouldn't know how to find a buyer for any kind of art or sculpture. But I was intrigued. Why, out of 14 million people in this city, was I intuitively drawn to this opportunity and why was this saleswoman thinking of me for the task that morning even though she hadn't seen me in well over a year and didn't know much about my business ability? Why did I feel prompted to go to the store? My intuition told me that this was a response from my prosperity work and that I should follow through even though I had no idea what to do at the time.

I obtained photos of the sculpture from the owner and did some research by calling galleries and such. I discovered that the owner had already been shopping it around for a couple of years. Furthermore, Constantin Brancusi is a famous sculptor whose modern abstract works sell for tens of millions, but this was an extremely early piece of his - a plaster head of a boy, not his abstract style at all, not even a bronze, and it apparently had no value in the art world. The sculpture had been a wedding present to this woman many decades earlier in Romania. When the Nazis came in and confiscated valuables, she managed to smuggle the piece out through Italy and brought it to America with her years later. Now as an older woman, she had no more attachment to the work and preferred the income instead. Wherever I called or visited, gallery owners and art professionals said to forget it, no one would want it. The piece is too early, it's not Brancusi's distinct style, it's only plaster, not even a completed sculpture. (I will say though, from the photos I had, it was a sensitive and lovely version of this young boy's head).

But all I could feel inside was that this was MY prosperity demonstration and it was given to me for a reason. I would not give up...

Around that time I was attending a Wednesday night healing class conducted by Janet Levy, a metaphysical teacher who called her class Expect a Miracle. In fact, she would give us all small affirmation cards. On one side was printed "Expect a Miracle" and on the blank side we were to write our own affirmation or what we wanted to "demonstrate", another metaphysical term for manifest.

After several months of getting nowhere with calls regarding a source to buy this Brancusi, I made a decision. I sat down quietly and very simply said to Infinite Intelligence, the Universe..."Find me a buyer for the Brancusi." That was it. Simple. Clear. Effortless. There would be no more outer action on my part. I had done whatever I could do myself with no result.

I intuitively must have known it was time to let go and let the Universe take over. As you will see, this was one of my greatest lessons in spiritual law, as I learned from this experience that we do not have to exhaust ourselves trying to force things to happen and THEN decide to go to our Source. We can go to our Source at the very beginning and save lots of time and hassle. As the saying goes, we can go direct and cut out the middle man. :-)

I continued to sit quietly and suddenly I heard an inaudible whisper coming from somewhere in my consciousness. My inner voice whispered "Guggenheim Museum". That's all. Guggenheim Museum. I had lived in Manhattan a couple of times so I knew the Guggenheim Museum was there, but I had never been there because I wasn't a modern art fan. (I had often visited the Metropolitan Museum). But the voice said Guggenheim Museum. It was clear.

I picked up the phone and called the Guggenheim in New York and spoke with the curator. She knew the sculpture because she said the owner had stored it with them years before when she first came to America and while she was settling in Palm Springs in the West. But she said they would have no interest in it. She could, however, give me the name of an art dealer who might be able to direct me somewhere. I made the call to the art dealer, Harold Diamond.

The art dealer did not refer me to anyone. Instead, he told me that if I was willing to bring the plaster head to New York, HE would buy it himself! He offered $50,000.

Now, imagine this scenario...

I had been living in Los Angeles for about 8 years. I had come to LA after spending a year in New York City. I was no longer accustomed to the cold climate (except for an occasional trip to the snow here at Lake Arrowhead). I gathered warm clothing while the owner of the Brancusi, having accepted the dealer's offer, paid for my plane ticket and prepared me for my trip to make the sale. This was the first time I actually saw the real plaster head, as it had been stored in a vault in Palm Springs. It was now in a canvas bag with small wheels on the bottom and it was exclusively my responsibility to get it safely to its destination.

It was January 5th. There was a mass exodus in both airports - LAX and JFK - with people returning after their holiday travels. And here I was rolling this plaster head in a canvas bag among throngs of travelers, taking utmost care not to let anyone or anything come in contact with that bag (remember, the sculpture was only plaster). If anything had happened to this piece of art on the way to its intended new home, I would have had to leave the country and go into hiding :-)

On the plane, when all carry ons had to be placed under the seat for takeoff, I refused to let go of the Brancusi. I held it like a live baby. I argued with the attendant until she realized how important this was to me. I was not about to have a plaster head selling for $50,000 go rolling down an airplane aisle! I held it close to my heart for much of the trip...

Box Office Flops - More Than Meets the Eye?

There's something oddly satisfying about seeing a big-budget movie flop. Whenever we hear about these ambitious, special effects-laden extravaganzas going down in flames we get an odd feeling of schadenfreude.

But why is this? Does it stem from the fact that we feel manipulated, almost exploited, by the movie industry? Perhaps. After all, movie studios make a lot of coin from tweaking our emotions, be it through adrenaline-filled action films or mawkishly tear-jerking weepies.

Perhaps the best reason for our guilty pleasure at seeing a big-budget movie flop is the fact that we feel like we won a battle. We caught Hollywood trying to pull a fast one by releasing a bad movie and trying to hype it anyway -- and we weren't fooled. Gotcha. Better luck next time.

That's all well and good, but there have been many excellent movies throughout the years that, for whatever reason, failed to make it big at the box office. Hey, just because a movie didn't make a lot of money on its release doesn't make it bad -- after all, Citizen Kane barely made enough to cover the cost of a wooden sled on its original release. It wasn't until its re-release and television syndication that it became perhaps the most critically acclaimed movie of all time.

So, here's a look at two movies that didn't live up to expectations on their release, but later went on to disprove the critics:

Fight Club

Despite eventually becoming an enormous cult hit, Fight Club performed poorly on its release. With a budget of $63 million it took just $37 million at the US box office. On its release the movie drew mixed critical reactions, partly due to its violent nature. One high profile critic described it as "a film without a single redeeming quality, which may have to find its audience in Hell", and the flop cost the Entertainment Chief of 20th Century Fox his job.

Despite a tepid reception, Fight Club went on to turn a small profit at the global box office before exploding in popularity in the DVD market, becoming one of the best-loved films of the 90s. Today you'd be hard pressed to find a young man's DVD collection that didn't boast a Fight Club DVD.

Shawshank Redemption

One of the most well known box office flops of recent years, The Shawshank Redemption, based on a Steven King novella, came up against the might of Forrest Gump at the box office. Audiences preferred Hanks' feel good vehicle over this depressing prison drama and, although Shawshank garnered 7 Oscar nominations, the box office take was pathetic.

This all changed once the movie was released on video. Bolstered by the Oscar endorsements Shawshank became the most rented video of 1995, going on to become our 2nd favorite movie of all time according to an Internet Movie Database poll.

The moral of the story, it seems, is that you should probably think twice before dismissing a movie based on its box office success. Movies are always at their most enjoyable when seen on the big screen, so you shouldn't miss out on the chance to see them as they were meant to be seen simply because the audiences can't tell a Hollywood gem from fools gold. After all, these are the same people who made Ernest Goes to Jail the number one movie in its opening week. Would you trust them?

Internet Marketing Tips - Are You Prepared For the Death of the Internet?

I remember as a kid listening to a re released recording of the "War Of The Worlds" broadcast done by Orson Wells back in the 30s. I can't believe that people actually believed that we were being invaded by Mars. My mom told me stories of how cars here in Jersey, where we live, were bumper to bumper all over the roads of NJ trying to get out of the state. Hard to imagine. Well, have you heard? The Internet is going to be dead by the year 2012.

Supposedly, ISPs are going to make it so that you can only view certain content online and if you want to view all the content that's online, you're going to have to pay extra in order to do that. Now, should that ever happen, it's going to hurt a lot of small businesses because a lot of revenue will be lost because of people who can't afford to pay that extra money to view their site. How much revenue? Who knows? Depends on how many people don't pay the extra charges.

Are you prepared? For that matter, are you worried? I'm not. For one thing, I doubt that this is ever going to happen. Why? Let's say all the major ISPs start charging to view content other than the sites that they want you to view. Don't you think that other ISPs are going to pop up to take advantage of this and get the business of people who refuse to be bullied by the big companies? When this happens, the big companies are going to start losing a TON of business and will eventually realize that they have to change their terms of service.

So if you're really concerned about the Internet killing your home business, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. Do I know for certain that this can never happen? Of course not. Nobody really knows what regulations will or won't take place. But worrying about it is the last thing you should be doing. Just as there are those who will pay for seeing extra sites, I'm sure merchants will be given the option to have their sites be among the premium sites that are seen by all. And if you're running a sound business, this shouldn't be any real hardship for you to do.

So don't worry...be happy.

The Internet isn't dead yet.

To YOUR Success,

Free FBI Criminal Background Checks Online - Government Records Lookups

When it comes to many high profile businesses, the standard background check is not enough. This leaves a company having to perform an FBI background check on their prospective employees. The reason for this may vary, but many companies like those that deal in investment securities or even armored car and transport companies will require the full-fledged check. Furthermore if you ever plan on going for a government contract, you will need to ensure that all of your employees can be trusted by putting them under a check.

Unlike a standard one which just checks with the national criminal records database, an FBI check goes a lot further. In this type of search, the person's school records as well as anything that constitutes as someone's "permanent record" will show up. In many cases, all a prospective employee has to do is to lie about a past residence and then you end up with an incomplete search since each jurisdiction is required to maintain their portion of the database whereas the FBI's database is already compiled and complete. This is the most up to date criminal record database and if your company has to deal with people's personal information or even large sums of cash, then chances are that you too will need to start running an record search on all of you prospective applicants.

These searches can also be related to the equivalent of having the prospective employee undergo a security clearance. While most people think that the government security clearance is just something for spies, this is untrue as many companies no utilize this type of search.

If you are worried that the information you are receiving from a standard record search is incomplete, then chances are that the Federal record check is what your company needs to start utilizing. While this type of search is obviously more expensive, it is also a lot more comprehensive than any other currently available.

Make sure that your next employee is a good choice for your company by having them undergo a Government record lookup today rather than the standard criminal background check. You will be amazed at the amount of information that is available through this type of background check.

Why Do Some Companies Drop Ship, And Why Are There Some That Don't?

In all of the years that I have been working out relationships with companies to dropship (or be included on The Shippers dropshipping directory list) I have learned a great deal in regards to this question.

The thing I want you to understand first of all (believe it or not) there are tons of companies out there doing a lot of business (off line) that have never even heard of dropshipping. It has been my job to educate them about dropshipping, and explain to them how it can benefit and expand their business. Once they learn of all that can be done online with dropshipping 95% of the business owners I talk to are ready to get a system set up so they can start dropshipping.

My suggestion to anyone who runs across a company that does not dropship, is to simply just ask them if they know about dropshipping and what it can do for their business? You might be surprised how many business owners are not familiar with dropshipping products. If you can just educate them about dropshipping, and how it works for Internet businesses, you might score yourself a pretty good supplier.

If you are uncomfortable approaching a business and doing this, there are many companies out there who will try to establish the relationship for you. They can help educate the business about dropshipping and do everything it will do for them in the long run.

So my answer to "those businesses that don't dropship", is simple - they just do not know about it, or the potential tax benefits they could have from growing their smaller business. The other 5% I talk to have limitations as to what the manufacturer will allow them to do with the product, and some companies are so new (and don't have a budget) to get a dropshipping system set in place. There is also a small percentage of companies that are happy with where their business is at, and they just do not want to have to deal with dropshipping side of it.

Matt Siltala has been doing business online since 1999 and has many people set up dropshipping business correctly. He has also been heavily involved with drop ship companies like The Shipper in order to help them better educate the businesses that use their services.
